The recently announced Marathi movie ‘Anand Doh’ will bring the rich spiritual and literary heritage of Saint Tukaram Maharaj to the screen, under the direction of Digpal Lanjekar. Known for historical dramas, Lanjekar aims to depict the deep cultural and spiritual value of Tukaram’s Abhanga Gatha, a collection of devotional poetry that remains a treasured part of Marathi literature and spirituality.
Saint Tukaram’s verses, written in the form of abhangas (devotional songs), provided guidance and inspiration to people, especially the marginalized, addressing the inequalities of the social structure of his time. This poetry, however, faced backlash from conservative scholars and was submerged in the Indrayani River. According to legend, these submerged manuscripts miraculously resurfaced, symbolizing the enduring and divine nature of Tukaram’s teachings. The film ‘Anand Doh’ is set to capture this mystic journey from the moment his verses were lost in the river to their reappearance, within the span of thirteen days.
The story will focus not only on Saint Tukaram but also on his wife Avali, his family, and the society of that era, including the warriors serving Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. It aims to show how the miraculous return of these poems affected all of them. The cast includes renowned Marathi actors such as Mukta Barve, Yogesh Soman, Ajay Purkar, Sameer Dharmadhikari, and Adinath Kothare, adding to the film’s authenticity and cultural depth.
Anand Doh, produced by Avinash Shinde, is expected to release in 2025. Through this film, Lanjekar hopes to make the Marathi saint literature accessible to contemporary audiences, aiming to evoke gratitude and reverence for this spiritual heritage in a way that resonates with today’s viewers
