WORKSHOP ON SHORT FILMMAKING
By National award winning Marathi Filmmaker ~ UMESH VINAYAK KULKARNI
A JOURNEY FROM AN IDEA TO A SHORTFILM
After the success of its first four editions, we are happy to announce fifth edition of “Shoot a short‟, a workshop on short film making. The workshop will be held between 7th January to 10th January 2016 at Sathaye College Auditorium, Vile Parle East, Mumbai. The enthusiasm shown by the participants & continuous enquiries from the people encouraged us to arrange the workshop for the fifth time. Three time National Award recipient director Umesh Vinayak Kulkarni and film academician Samar Nakhate will be conducting the workshop. The workshop will primarily be held in English Language.
Passionate about short films as an independent form of storytelling, Umesh Kulkarni says that despite the easy access to technology and resources available to upcoming filmmakers, there arent good content driven short films being made in India. “By providing the right inputs through a workshop, I believe enthusiast participants can develop a better perspective and understanding of the medium of short filmmaking. Short films and feature films are as different as short stories and novels hence should not be compared on the same level”, adds Umesh Kulkarni. At the workshop, aspects such as basic concepts of film making, fundamentals of Production of Short Film, Translating Idea into a Script, Pre-Production, Production and Post Production, working with Actors / Non Actors, Crew Management and Scope for Shorts at Short Film Festivals will be dealt with. The workshop is open for people above 18 years of age.
Though known primarily for his feature films like Valu, Vihir, Deool and Highway with eight short films to his credit, filmmaker Umesh Kulkarni has also kept his passion for short films alive. To keep the short films movement growing he has also started a short film club in Pune. Umesh Kulkarni made Girni while studying at the FTII. This 22-minute film, about a middle class family starting a business to support themselves ultimately getting sucked into it, won the filmmaker recognition and accolades at the National and International film circuit. The film was awarded the Presidents Gold medal for best Non feature Film, Best Director, Best Cinematography at 2005 Indian National awards. The film traveled across 40 International film festivals winning top prizes in reputed film festivals like Karlovy Vary in Czech Republic, Bourges En Court in Spain and IFFLA in USA. Another of his short film, Three of Us, premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and was screened at around 50 international film festivals. In 2013 the director was invited as a member of Jury for the prestigious Clermont Ferrand Short Film Festival in France and the festival also conducted a retrospective of all his short films.
